As with many concepts related to PCs and gaming, the topic of DPI appears frequently. However, what is it?

DPI stands for ‘dots per inch, which is a measurement of how many pixels are displayed on the screen horizontally and vertically within an inch. The greater the number of dots or pixels that can be displayed in one inch, generally means that the display will have better clarity. This means that images will appear smoother when playing games because there are more pixels available to change to recreate them.

What this boils down to is that having high DPI increases your ability to see clearly what you are doing in-game. For example, playing at extremely high resolutions such as 1440 80hz requires players to have a 1080 60hz monitor and a very high DPI. If your DPI was not high enough then the smaller image on your screen would appear blurry and that is why we gamers spend hundreds of dollars on equipment.

As a general rule, the more pixels that are viewed, the higher resolution your mouse cursor will be moved by single-unit movements of your mouse. If there are lots of pixels on the screen (e.g., 1920 x 1080 or similar), then moving your mouse one inch would move your cursor across several pixels – making it look like the very little movement had taken place at all! And so while 400DPI might have been fine for a smaller resolution, it is unusable at a higher resolution.
