What Is A Liquid Cooler And How Does It Work

A liquid cooler is a type of cooling system usually consisting of a radiator, a pump, a CPU water block, and tubing in which a coolant is known as “coolant” is driven by the pump through the block to absorb heat from the processor. The resulting heated coolant leaves the water block and flows into the tubing and radiators where it transfers its thermal energy to air blown over it. This allows it to dissipate its own heat before returning back to repeat the cycle again.

The Radiator – Made up of many aluminum or copper fins that facilitate dissipating heat into surrounding air by allowing more surface area for hot air and fluid molecules to collide and mix with (radiate). Connected via tubes pumps circulating fluid (water/coolant), where it can be cooled by fans blowing over the radiator.

Very similar to how your car’s cooling system works, only in a closed-off loop system rather than the outside atmosphere. Water/coolant is pumped through the block and back into the radiator for a continuous cycle of absorbing heat from surrounding ambient air.

The Processor Water Block – A water block is an interface that attaches to the processor to transfer its thermal energy onto coolant (water/coolant) via several micro-channels and a copper cold plate (base). The size and shape of these channels determine how well your particular CPU block will perform as they directly affect flow rate and pressure drop. More advanced blocks feature plates with micro-fins covering their surface; this increases the surface area allowing a higher volume of coolant to pass through it.

Pump – A pump is a mechanical device that moves fluids from one point to another, typically in a circular motion with impeller blades attached. In PC water cooling these pumps are usually found at the bottom of the system’s main radiator and move fluid between the CPU block/radiator, back to your reservoir or if you have one, a secondary water block for your graphics card. Pumps do not make heat nor do they dissipate any heat rather they transport it from location to location via tubing/hoses. This is why large radiators – with high-quality fans – are important as cooler incoming air lowers the overall operating temperature of water traveling through the blocks.

While not directly part of your water cooling loop water-cooled PCs do require a pump to circulate fluid throughout the system; this is primarily found mounted at the bottom of the main radiator. The pump works by spinning impeller blades within its center using power from your system’s power supply (PSU). This impeller forces liquid through micro-channels in your CPU block and down into the main radiator where it continues on through the tubing/hoses back into the reservoir or if you have one, graphics card block.

The Coolant – Commonly known as “Water” however some users prefer pure deionized distilled water while others prefer ethylene glycol with its higher boiling point enabling usage in higher temperature environments. Propylene glycol is another popular alternative.

There is an abundance of different types of liquids used for water-cooling, each with its own advantages and disadvantages resulting in what works best for your specific application.

Some uses include: Water (most common) – Mixed 50/50 (half distilled/half deionized), Can be cheap but has the lowest heat capacity causing the system to run hotter than other liquids. Pure Distilled Water – More expensive due to lack of impurities however has high heat capacity making it more efficient at removing heat from components. Deionized Water – Best when there is a possibility of mixing with tap or well water as it removes all minerals which could cause blockages, corrode metals and reduce pump lifespan over time. It is more expensive but has the highest heat capacity. Ethylene Glycol – Superior boiling point, Contains additives called anti-freeze that prevent water from freezing thus preventing your system from being rendered useless during winter months or cold environments where temperatures drop below 4c/40f. More expensive than other liquids however has the lowest heat capacity making components run slightly hotter over time. Propylene Glycol – Less toxic than ethylene glycol while having a similar boiling point and is often mixed with distilled water for its high heat capacity properties without sacrificing too much cost compared to ethylene glycol.

The Radiator(s) – Most radiators are made of aluminum blocks covered in micro-fins which increase surface area allowing coolant to transfer more heat into the surrounding environment. This is typically what sits between your pump and fan(s).

Radiator core construction can vary greatly with some radiators featuring brass cores while others aluminum. A good quality radiator features copper fins pressed up against an aluminum core resulting in excellent volumetric efficiency (more on this later) where fins are much closer to the coolant than other radiators due to reduced spacing between them. Most liquid-cooled systems today use “single” or “dual” pass radiators which means liquid travels through them one time using a single row of screws holding fans onto the radiator, dual-pass designs feature two rows of screws allowing for liquid to travel through them twice before exiting out into environment increasing its cooling properties over standard single-pass designs, however, are typically more expensive as manufacturing costs increase due to increased complexity.

Fittings – Used to make tubing connections between water blocks and radiators/reservoirs these little pieces of hardware are commonly made from brass, nickel-plated brass, or chrome-plated brass. Additional fittings are used on the cooling loop itself where they are mounted at the edge of a radiator where the tubing connects to it allowing liquid to flow through them in one direction only for easier installation. This type of fitting is known as “barbs” with different types serving different purposes depending on the application. For instance, some barbs feature built-in valves which aid in bleeding excess air out of your system while others may be angled upwards or downwards preventing coolant from entering into areas you don’t want it to.

MISC – Coolant is the liquid used in water-cooling to transfer heat from components into the radiator(s) where they become exhausted into the surrounding environment for dissipation.

Coolant comes in various colors depending on manufacturer however each type should be labeled with information stating it is safe for use inside your computer which is important as some types are not compatible with others. An example would be using “Green” coolant inside of a system mixed with “Red” coolant, mixing these two types up can result in irreversible damage to your cooling loop components (pump, tubing, block, reservoir, etc). The fan(s) – Used to push air through the radiator or radiators these little fans generate large amounts of static pressure allowing coolant to transfer more heat into the surrounding environment than a fan with low static pressure which typically sits closer to the radiator at its edge and features much thinner blades. Fans may vary in size from 40mm up to 140mm where larger fans cannot fit inside smaller units forcing their use as exhaust only however you can increase static pressure by adding additional fans onto airflow exhausted out of the case, this is commonly referred to as “push/pull” configurations increasing efficiency even further. Fans can feature various speeds, rotation per minute (rpm), and noise levels depending on how they function. It’s important to know fan speeds as well as how many fans your system consists of so you may properly configure them for optimal cooling.

Why Do You Use A Liquid Cooling System Instead Of Air Cooling?

Most computers have a heat sink and fan to cool down the CPU, but if you want to push your computer to its limits, there is a good chance that even using both the CPU temperature will rise too high for comfort.
